It’s a busy time for Manila’s theater scene*, with local productions as well as touring imports opening and closing in the next two months. The country’s first big hit jukebox musical is back on stage for its 7th season! With iconic Aegis hits like “Basang Basa sa Ulan”, “Sinta”, and “Luha” and set in a town that’s perpetually flooded, it’s the perfect show to catch this rainy season! Theater and TV actresses Aicelle Santos and Kim Molina are back to reprise their roles for this run, as are Jerald Napoles, Pepe Herrera, and Isay Alvarez Seña.

Back for a few more weeks this year, it features the very best of Eraserheads and a story young and older folks alike can relate to. It’s no wonder the theater is always packed. Known for hit musicals like last year’s Waitress, and the recently closed Beautiful, Atlantis Theatrical is taking a stab at children’s shows with their Imaginarium Young Theater. Originally staged in Manila five years ago, the musical Dani Girl comes back with its original cast as well as a young cast starring Felicity Kyle Napuli (Matilda, Lion King) in the title role. It’s the story of how a little girl tackles her life-threatening illness. It promises to be an inspiring show that will tug at your heartstrings.

If you’re looking for something a little more serious, Twin Bill Theater’s staging of Dancing Lessons might be right up your alley. The play is about a young man with Asperger’s Syndrome who asks the help of a Broadway actress to learn how to dance. It is directed by Francis Matheu, starring Jill Peña and Randy Villarama.

The Japanese troupe ‘Drum Tao’ returns to Manila with a new show that combines contemporary Japanese art with martial arts, choreography, fashion, and of course beats and rhythm from Japanese Taiko drummers. This show has been staged around the world in 24 different cities, and Manila is up next!

Stephen Sondheim is all the rage this year, with not one, not two, but three of Sondheim’s musical’s being staged locally. The first of which is Company, about a man who turned 35 and still unable to commit to a relationship despite all his friends being married couples. Directed by Topper Fabregas, it stars OJ Mariano, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Michael Williams, and more.

Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre


September is for Shakespeare at the Theatre at Solaire! UK-based company, Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre, is coming to Manila to stage two of the Bard’s most iconic works. The first is ‘Macbeth’, a Scottish general who receives a prophecy that he will one day be King of Scotland. UK TV actor Alex Avery stars in this production, and is also playing Snug in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre

One of Shakespeare’s more fantastical stories will be staged as part of SRT’s twin bill tour season in Manila. It is a comedy portraying the events around the wedding of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta. The two Shakespeare productions is brought to Manila by Lunchbox Theatrical, the same company who brought hit touring productions of The Phantom of the Opera, and the upcoming Cats.
