Sakura Blooms in Tokyo

April heralds events all across Japan that celebrate the iconic Japanese cherry blossoms, called sakura. From the capital, the annual Fuji Kawaguchiko Cherry Blossom Festival (April 4–12) is easily accessible by a two-hour train ride on the Fuji Excursion JR line. Head to Lake Kawaguchi in Fuji Five Lakes, where you can appreciate a landscape covered by over 300 sakura trees — locate them at the promenade on the lake’s north end. The festival also pairs the blooms with food and drink and souvenir shopping — check out pop-up stalls offering local eats and crafts. Then linger until after sundown to see the sakura canopy illuminated. Admission is free. fujisan.ne.jp

Gastronomy in Bali

Every year, foodies and chefs flock to the Festival Hub at Taman Kuliner for the Ubud Food Festival, a three-day cross-cultural culinary adventure (April 17–19). This year’s theme is “Heroes”, which highlights the figures behind the Indonesian culinary scene. Tickets are available under three categories — kitchen stage, special events and masterclasses. There will also be free events ranging from film screenings to kid-friendly activities. Tip: Consider the Food Lover Pass, which gives you a day’s access to 15 cooking demos and three culinary competitions. The pass goes for IDR260,000 (Php915) for residents and IDR360,000 (Php1,270) for international visitors. Visit the website for event schedules, ticketing details and other info. ubudfoodfestival.com

See the Funny Side of Melbourne

In for a good laugh? Then take to the city’s designated theaters, pubs and clubs, where comedians from across Australia and New Zealand will be gathering for the Melbourne International Comedy Fest (until April 19).
