Here are some fun happenings across the network this month
6th Yokohama Triennale
August 4 to November 5
Art exhibitions abound internationally this year — the 56th Venice Biennale is always a big event, as is this month’s 6th Yokohama Triennale. In Nishi Ward (45 minutes by car from Tokyo) the Yokohama Triennale anchors down at a few bay area venues. Themed “Islands, Constellations and Galapagos”, the triennale will showcase works by established and up-and-coming artists from around the world.
Wow and Flutter: The Weekend
August 11 to 13 & August 26
Broaden your musical palate with tunes from local indie artists at The Weekend. Aside from performances from local musical acts, there will be art installations to see, delicious local food to try, a craft market to survey, and some fun family activities you can take part in.
Tokyo & Osaka
Summer Sonic 2017
August 19 & 20
Japan’s annual Summer Sonic music festival returns with a solid lineup that includes the Foo Fighters and Black Eyed Peas, as well as regional favorites like South Korea’s Hyukoh, Taiwan’s Chen Hui Ting, and local comedian Pikotaro (of “pen-pineapple-apple-pen” fame). As tradition goes, two sets of artists will play concurrently on the 19th in Tokyo and Osaka, and then switch cities for their performances on the 20th.
10th Singapore Night Festival
August 18 to 26
This year, the Lion City’s largest outdoor performing arts festival highlights the allure of night lights. Take to the streets in the Bras Basah-Bugis precinct to observe the revelry, or kick off your shoes and dance. If there’s only time for one event, check out the free-for-all Armenian Street Carnaval Bloc procession that highlights the vibrancy of the Bahian Carnival of Brazil.
29th SEA Games
August 19 to 30
Showcasing the best sporting talent from 11 countries across South-East Asia, the 29th SEA Games will see 405 events spanning 38 sports taking place at venues around the Malaysian capital. Some events are free while others are ticketed; visit the Kuala Lumpur 2017 website for more info.
