Original Boot Camp, Kuala Lumpur
Touted as Malaysia’s first boot camp, Original Boot Camp classes are held at Padang Astaka in Petaling Jaya, as well as KLCC Park and Padang Merbok in Kuala Lumpur. This group fitness training system, which is suitable for people of all fitness levels, combines HIIT (high intensity interval training) with cross-training and bodyweight drill progressions. Because a lot of the exercises require participants to work with each other, there’s quickly a strong sense of camaraderie.
Intensity Matters, Tokyo
Held five times a week at an outdoor public park in the heart of Ebisu, Intensity Matters is Tokyo’s only fully equipped outdoor gym. Using barbells, battle ropes, ab mats and gymnastic rings, the workouts are very CrossFit-esque as both founding coaches, Allan Wooding and Gabe Pattee, are certified CrossFit trainers. Don’t worry about feeling lost, though. The classes at Intensity Matters are kept to no more than 12 participants each time so you’ll get the personalized attention you need.
Coach A Metafit Workout, Cebu
Weighing almost 309lbs in 2011, Alan Choachuy took part in The Biggest Loser Philippines. Under the intense tutelage of coach Jim Saret, he emerged from the camp at 240lbs. After the show, Alan continued pursuing a healthy lifestyle, and in 2012, launched Coach A Metafit Workout. The workout is based on the fitness program devised for him by coach Jim during his stint on The Biggest Loser. It combines short- and high-intensity workouts, with a mix of cardio and strength training exercises. “We also organize special sessions where we’ll trek up the hills of Cebu or work out on the beach or by the pool,” Alan says.
Simon Pink Group-Fitness, Singapore
Many of the participants at Simon Pink’s boot camp sessions are long-time clients, and it’s easy to see why. Held three times a week, each session is deliberately set up to be slightly different from the rest so there’s no room for boredom or slacking. Pink specializes in Afterburn workouts, which combine HIIT and active rest training. Simply put, these boot camp sessions are designed to burn more calories than traditional, longer workouts. In addition to fitness training, Pink also regularly dishes out nutrition advice to his clients.
Urban Bootcamp 853, Macau
Had one too many Portuguese egg tarts? Fret not. At Urban Bootcamp 853, coaches Nuno Fernandes and João Braga reckon trainees can burn over 500 calories on average during one of their 60-minute sessions. Workouts are held at either Central Park in Taipa or Grand Coloane Resort in Coloane, and usually comprise circuits of HIIT and bodyweight resistance training. Newcomers enjoy a complimentary trial session.
Yogalates Bliss, Dubai
Enjoy a respite from the stifling Dubai heat on the seventh-floor pool terrace of Fraser Suites. Twice a week, a group of fitness enthusiasts gather for an hour of Yogalates, a funky fusion of yoga and Pilates. “Our focus is less on aesthetics and more on muscular strength, balance and inner happiness. Each class combines excellent anatomical focus and core strength with yoga and its therapeutic elements,” says Noura El-Imam, founder of Yogalates Bliss. Whether you’re a beginner or an athlete looking to complement your active lifestyle, Yogalates offers a unique way to build strength and balance.
Primal Fit, Hong Kong
With classes held in Tamar Park, Sun Yat Sen Park and Lamma Island, Primal Fit workouts are an escape from the steel-and-concrete jungle that is Hong Kong. All sessions start with a dynamic warm-up, to prevent injury and ensure all joints are mobilized. From there, you’ll move on to bodyweight exercises to build muscle, burn calories and raise your metabolism. These exercises may make use of equipment such as the TRX, sandbags and kettlebells or even just the surrounding environment like stairs, banisters and benches. Don’t worry about having less than stellar fitness abilities — all the exercises are tailored to suit different levels. Plus, working out in a group is a surefire way to feel motivated.
