Ask the expert: How do I protect my skin from sun damage?

1. Make it a point to apply sunblock every day. If you’re out in the sun, reapply every two to three hours

2. Use broad-spectrum sunblock that protects from both UVB (which causes burning) and UVA (which causes aging) rays

3. Find a lip balm with SPF, so that your lips are protected as well

4. Choose a daily sunblock that suits your skin type — go with lighter ones, with a matte or velvety finish, for oily skin, and choose thicker, moisturizing ones for dry skin

5. For sunburn relief, use a cold compress or mild, fragrance-free moisturizer to help soothe the skin. Pro hack: Store your lotion in the refrigerator! But for more severe cases, be sure to consult a board-certified dermatologist
