Catch our December cover stars in the film that made them famous. The award-winning documentary Sunday Beauty Queen will be screened as part of “Today Is Our Future,” the United Nations Sustainable Development Group (SDG) Documentary Film Festival.
The festival is a joint project of the Embassies of Austria, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands, with the aim of increasing awareness among Filipinos of the universality of human rights, particularly of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The SDGs aim to free people from poverty, create a decent standard of living for all, and to protect our natural environment. By screening documentaries that highlight and create awareness of these rights among the Filipino working class and the youth, the festival hopes to mobilize them to work towards their realization.
Sunday Beauty Queen is one of six featured films from Austria, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and the Philippines. The poignant documentary, directed by Baby Ruth Villarama, follows a group of Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong as they prepare for an annual beauty pageant. It won a number of local awards as well as the best international documentary award at the 5th London Labour Film Festival in the United Kingdom.
The screening will be held on the 8th of December 2019, 7:00 PM at Cinema 4 of Gateway Mall, Araneta Center, Cubao, Quezon City. Admission is free but be sure to get there early as seats are limited.
