For Studying

If you’re cramming in essays and projects, travel time can be hugely productive with the ultimate travel gadget: the right laptop. For the great outdoors

If you need a screen that’s as big and tough as possible, try the drop-proof, dust-proof and freeze-proof LG Gram 17Z990 (US$1,700). With a 17-inch, 2,560 x 1,600-pixel display, it’s also got a backlit keyboard with two brightness settings. Equipped with an Intel Core i7 processor and 256GB storage, this laptop weighs 1.3kg and is 17.8mm thick, and its battery keeps going for 20 hours. lg.com

For everyday use

If you don’t need a high-performance laptop, just a super-light one, Microsoft’s 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 2 (from US$999) is for you. The basic version comes with an Intel Core i5 processor (though you can upgrade to i7), 128GB storage and a 2,256 x 1,504-pixel display. At just 14.5mm and 1.25kg, its portability is hard to beat. It’s sold in black, platinum, burgundy and cobalt blue. microsoft.com

For fuss-free travel

If you like to travel light and you’re a fan of Apple products, then you’ll love the latest Apple MacBook Air (US$999). With a thickness of 15.6mm and weighing in at 1.25kg, this 13.3-inch laptop is super-light. It’s also got a 2,560 x 1,600-pixel Retina display, an Intel Core i5 processor and 128GB of storage. The downsides: upgrades are expensive, and you’ve got to like macOS. apple.com

For photographers

If you use a “proper” camera and like to study your photos as you travel, the 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) 13.3-inch display on the Dell XPS 13 (US$900) will be appealing. This Intel Core i3-powered laptop has 128GB storage for travel photos, with upgrades to as much as 2TB. Despite all that, the XPS still weighs a puny 1.23kg and is just 11.6mm slim. dell.com
